PLEASE DO NOT send requests for us to rescue service animals that are in a shelter of any kind UNLESS they are a StarLight Assistance Animal. Each of our animals are tattooed. We do NOT chase ghosts. The dog that is being emailed is a yellow Labrador and is claimed to be a former guide dog. In a shelter in Louisiana. However this same email has a picture of a yellow Lab and I have received this picture 5 times in the past two years. If this dog was ever truly in a shelter it has 1) been claimed by the school that trained it or 2) has already been destroyed.

There is one individual (at least) that is being sought by several state and county police departments as they are a serial rapist prowling for his next victim. This rapist does not care if it is a boy or girl. He does both.

Most of these emails start out as hoaxes. Then are picked up by well intentioned individuals that truly care for the animal’s well being. Before sending the emails any further there are several things you should do.

1) Contact the shelter and ask if the animal is ready for adoption.

2) Get complete information on the condition of the animal. Ask about parasites, any medical conditions, how long the dog has before it is destroyed and if they will allow extra time so YOU can contact the breed rescue.

3) Contact the breed rescue and explain what you have been told and ask them to get the animal before it is too late to save its life.

4) Help sponsor the animal. Getting the animal out of the shelter is only one BABY step. Every rescue MUST have food, shots, emergency & normal vet care, yard clean-up, etc.

5) VOLUNTEER at any rescue/shelter. Every rescue needs to have volunteers. We need everything from people that will help with taking & maintaining inventory to fostering to cleaning the shelter pens/cages/stables.

The following story was emailed to me and I wanted to share it with you.

For Foster Homes Everywhere
Author Unknown

My dark round eyes look up at you, who reads the words created by the tap..tap..tap. ...

I lay beside my mistress, on tile where it is cool, and I will wait for however long she wishes to stay down here, and tap tap on her laptop.

Sometimes when I listen to her familiar sounds, a memory-wind brings to me sadness, of days when I was not permitted amongst those who walk on twos.

Of days when drink and food were the only interactions we had.

Of times when my litter after litter were given off to unfamiliar humans, never to be seen again.

On cold and rainy days, of snowy frosty days, of days so hot my coat felt like a prison out in the sun.

All those memories surface when that memory-breeze slides in... and that is why I look up at you.

Had it not been for you, with the kindness of your bottomless heart, in your arms that held me when I came, matted and feces infected, in your house amongst your own litter, I would not be here today, laying at my mistress' feet, listening to those sacred familiar sounds in a home that I know is mine, away from elements of wind and cold--MINE.

I am adopted.

Had it not been for you, my foster home, I would not have known how to act inside, nor trusted this good woman's touch, nor trusted the attention I receive consistently and tenderly.

I think of you when that memory-breeze comes by, for now you are associated with it, as my bridge from there to here. You sacrificed your own heart to allow me to find love amongst your kind.

I will forever be grateful for this.

When I was out alone in the cold and wet, the world was such an ugly place to belong. I never thought of wanting to be anywhere else but there, for I did not know there was anywhere else except there.

You proved me wrong.

I still remember your smells and the movements of your day. It was your touch that awakened me. You thought you were just removing mats from me. All the while you were taking away the smallness of my world.

Do you think of me at times, as I do you? I could smell the many dogs that have been in your dwelling. For me, you were my only bridge. For you, there were many that came to you and left again.

Were there so many that I am not one to be remembered?

My eyes flit back and forth as I think of this, and my mistress instinctively drops her hand from her tap tap of her laptop and softly strokes me. It is her touch that assures me that you do remember me.

You chose her for me. If you loved me enough to give her to me, then I know you remember me. Thank you.

::::a soft sigh::::

My mistress looks down at me and smiles. She tells me we will be having company. There is a dog who will come to stay with us a short while, until he gets to go to his forever home.

My mistress cups my muzzle in her hands and reminds me we must give back what we are given.

I know my mistress' heart. It will break her heart every time a dog will leave.

My tail thumps. Surely she needs me to get through this. It is what I am here for.

To love her when she needs to be loved. I rise and lay my head upon her lap.

I remember your eyes and realize the new dog will always remember my mistress' eyes.

Her touch.

It is wonderful to have an adopted home but our foster homes are just as important, even if we are only there for just a short while.

My mistress turns to tap tap again, and I lay my head back upon the tile. I settle into the wondrous familiarity of my home and begin to count the breaths until our foster dog arrives.

Thanks to all the humans that foster our fur kiddos until they find their forever homes.

I Adopted Your Pet Today
Author Unknown

I adopted your pet today...
The one you left at the pound;
The one you had for ten years
And no longer wanted around.

I adopted your pet today...
Did you know that he's lost weight?
Did you know he's scared and depressed
And seems to have lost all faith?

I adopted your pet today...
He had fleas and a little cold;
Guess you don't care what shape he's in
You abandoned him I am told.

I adopted your pet today...
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies,
Or was there NO reason he couldn't stay?

I adopted your pet today...
He doesn't play or even eat much;
I guess he's very sad inside and
It'll take time for him to trust.

I adopted your pet today...
And here he is going to stay;
He's found his FOREVER home
And a warm bed in which to lay.

I adopted your pet today...
And shall give him all that he will need
- Patience, love, and security,
So he can forget your selfish deed.

Your dogs (5) and cats (12) will NOT br destroyed as you had told the man at the pound you hoped he would do.  You see I was called and I took 3 dogs.  Three that would not have been adopted to anyone -- their time was up.  Then I was called the next day and there were 10 baby kittens that would be taken to the pound the next business day and they would be destroyed immediately but this will never happen either because I was called.  Now they all have forever homes where they are loved and enjoyed with each waking moment.  They all have plenty of food and LOTS of love -- even though the three dogs are still scared about being in a stranger's home.  I know who one of you are -- she hears you go past our home every day and when she does, she sits up and cries for you to come and take her home again.  When you don't stop for her, she loses just a little more happiness.  Her heart breaks all over again.  I live on a road that has only one way in or out so I can't even ask you to take a different route -- but you wouldn't care anyway.  You left her because you "have a new puppy to play with so the old one had to go", you wrote on the surrender form.  She is a wonderful dog -- she plays with my puppies and is very gentle with my cats.  She even sits and watches my saltwater fish.  You had no just reason for throwing her away.

=========================

This was sent to me by email from one of my transport teams.  They apologized that they would not be bringing the animals to my shelter, but I THANK  GOD they were willing to keep the animals and I know they will have great forever lives.  I investigate all of my transport teams the same as adoptors in case the animal(s) have to spend the night somewhere.  I know they will have a safe place to lay their head(s).  I truly appreciate Joe & his wife Jill for all the time they are putting into their new family members and for adopting all of them.

I'm sorry.  I forgot to post the fact that both other dogs and both other cats were adopted the same days Joe & Jill were called to bring the animals to my shelter.  They all have wonderful & loving homes.  The dogs have a husband/wife trucker team that drive all over the country and the cats are in homes with three children for the kitten to play with and a grandmother for the older male to relax with.  I have met both of these families and all the animals and they are ALL super HEROES.  They all are well love by each other.  Love is a two-way street.   Give 1 mile of love to an animal and your will get 100 miles of love in return.  Animals do not know how to not love -- this is something only negelet and abuse can teach them.

PLEASE ADOPT YOUR NEXT BEST FRIEND FROM AN ANIMAL SHELTER NEAR YOU.  YOU WILL NEVER BE SORRY YOU DID.
